Viral Cleaning Hacks: What Actually Works

Five viral TikTok cleaning hacks put to the test, from dishwasher tablets in the toilet to dryer sheets for dusting: which work and which don't.
Viral Cleaning TikToks: Separating Fact from Fiction
Let's face it, we've all been there.
Scrolling through TikTok, mesmerized by seemingly magical cleaning hacks that promise to banish grime and transform our homes into sparkling havens with the wave of a cleaning wand (or, you know, a dryer sheet).
But do these viral cleaning TikToks actually live up to the hype?
As cleaning professionals, we at Clean on Demand were intrigued (and maybe a little skeptical!).
So, we donned our rubber gloves, grabbed our trusty cleaning supplies, and embarked on a mission to test some of the most popular TikTok cleaning trends.
Did we uncover hidden gems or cleaning duds?
Read on to find out!
The Dishwasher Tablet Toilet Bowl Hack

Sounds easy enough, right?
It works... to some extent. We dropped a tablet into a toilet bowl that had seen better days (let's just say it had some stubborn stains).
After letting it fizz for about 30 minutes, we scrubbed and flushed. While the tablet did help remove some of the lighter stains, it wasn't the miracle worker TikTok promised.
For truly stubborn stains and a thorough clean, you're better off sticking with a dedicated toilet bowl cleaner.
The Fabric Softener Dusting Method

Proceed with caution! While the fabric softener sheet did leave a pleasant scent (who doesn't love that fresh laundry smell?), we noticed that it also left a slight residue on surfaces.
Our concern?
This residue could actually attract more dust in the long run. Plus, fabric softener isn't ideal for all surfaces. For best results, stick to microfiber cloths and appropriate cleaning solutions for different materials.
The Magic Eraser Shoe Cleaning Trick

This one's a winner! We tested this hack on a pair of well-worn sneakers with scuff marks and dirt.
The Magic Eraser worked like a charm, lifting away the grime and leaving the shoes looking noticeably cleaner. Just be sure to test a small area first, as Magic Erasers can be abrasive on certain materials.
The Lemon and Baking Soda Microwave Cleaning Hack

It's a thumbs up! We zapped a bowl of water with lemon slices and baking soda in a splattered microwave. The steam created by the lemon water worked wonders, softening the stubborn food particles and making them super easy to wipe away. Plus, the lemon infused the microwave with a fresh, clean scent. Say goodbye to that lingering smell of last week's leftovers!
The Dryer Sheet Cleaning Hacks

It's a mixed bag. We tried using dryer sheets to clean a burnt pan (the aftermath of an ambitious cooking experiment gone wrong) and a shower door with hard water stains. While the dryer sheets were surprisingly effective for removing soap scum and hard water stains, they weren't a miracle cure for the burnt pan. For tough cleaning tasks, you're still better off using dedicated cleaning solutions.
While some hacks are genuine cleaning gems that will make your life easier, others are duds that might even do more harm than good.
Our experiment showed us that while some TikTok cleaning hacks hold true, others fall flat. Remember, when it comes to cleaning, sometimes the tried-and-true methods are still the best.
But hey, there's no harm in having fun and experimenting with a few TikTok trends—just be sure to do your research and proceed with caution. And if all else fails, you can always call in the professionals!
